Misconduct of Law Enforcement

Misconduct of Law Enforcement - refers to any inappropriate or illegal conduct taken by police while performing their official duties. This includes coercing witnesses, the destruction or withholding of evidence, excessive use of force, false arrest, racial profiling, a failure to intervene, and any other civil rights violations.

Notes:

Most departments are legally required to have an internal affairs or citizen complaint procedure. File a report directly with the specific police department or sheriff's office involved.

State Oversight & Civil Rights Agencies: If your local complaint remains unresolved, you can escalate the issue. For example, in California, you can file a complaint with the California Department of Justice or reach out to the California Civil Rights Department.

Department of Justice (DOJ): The Civil Rights Division of the DOJ investigates patterns and practices of misconduct within local departments, as well as individual officer abuses of power.
